James Cameron is “struck by the similarity” between the Titan submarine disaster and that of the Titanic.
The director of the hit film “Titanic”, released in 1997, confided in the tragedy that cost the lives of five men who descended to the bottom of the ocean to observe the wreckage of the famous ship. Aged 19 to 77, they boarded a submarine that ended up missing a few days ago. Yesterday authorities confirmed that debris was discovered and the craft had been destroyed by ocean pressure. All five passengers were pronounced dead.
James Cameron spoke regarding this disaster and underlined the dark similarities between this accident and that of the RMS Titanic which occurred 111 years ago.
He told >, “Many members of the community [des ingénieurs spécialisés dans les plongées profondes, ndlr] were very worried regarding this submarine, and a number of them even wrote letters to the company, explaining that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that it needed to be certified, etc I am struck by the similarity to the Titanic disaster, where the captain was repeatedly warned of the presence of ice ahead of his ship and yet sped full speed into an ice field on a moonless night. Many people died as a result of this disaster. And for a very similar tragedy, where the warnings weren’t heeded, to happen in exactly the same place, with all the diving that’s happening around the world, I think it’s just amazing to find that there is no other solution. I think it’s just amazing. It’s really surreal.”
The victims of the Titan submarine disaster all hoped to see the wreckage of the Titanic, which sank following hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from England to the United States in 1912.
James Cameron added that he always had doubts regarding the security of the Titan.
“As a submersible designer, I designed and built a submarine to go to the deepest place in the ocean, three times deeper than the Titanic,” he explained. “So I understand the engineering issues with building this type of vehicle and all the safety protocols that have to be adhered to. And I think it’s absolutely critical to get the message out… [que] deep immersion diving is an art that requires maturity. Since the early 1960s, when there were a few accidents, no one has been killed in deep diving until today.”
