The firefighters of the Hemeco zone were called this Friday morning for a perilous mission: the stretcher of an octogenarian found refrigerated along the Ourthe in Sy. The man had been missing since Thursday and so he spent the whole night and morning on the ground, unable to get up.

The firefighters received the call at noon for ambulance assistance on rue de Luins in Sy (Ferrières). Walkers have indeed discovered on a walking path, along the Ourthe in Sy, an elderly man, immobilized on the ground. “We left with four sappers and two firefighters from Erezéesays Michel Legros from the Hamoir barracks. The road ends at a railway bridge and is no longer passable. We then took a steep path on foot which leads to the Ourthe, regarding 800 meters away. That’s where we found the victim.”

She was in a terrible state: wet, weak and hypothermic (35 degrees body temperature). The man appeared disoriented and suffering from hip pain, with suspected fracture. “We put a survival blanket on him, reassured him and then stretchered him with a mountain stretcher to the ambulance, for the 800 meters to do in the opposite direction. A complex operation given the rugged terrain.”

It was by contacting the neighboring police for another intervention that the firefighters learned that the man they were busy saving had been missing since Thursday. “He is a Hamoirien living in rue du Néblonfurther details the firefighter. It is assumed that he went for a walk, that he slipped and that he did not know how to get up. He spent the whole night alone, unable to move or call for help. He had to face the terrible showers. Fortunately, walkers were passing by. He was in a bad state. He got lucky…”

When help arrived, the man, disoriented and confused, let himself go. He is injured but his life is not in danger. He was taken to Marche-en-Famenne hospital.
