Preventing Long Covid: Study Shows 40% Reduction with Metformin

Intense fatigue, dysfunction of the neurological system, cognitive disorders, breathing difficulties, sensory disorders… “Long covid” is defined by the presence of symptoms that last more than three months following an acute infection with Sars-Cov2. “A situation that can have a significant impact on daily life,” say scientists from the University of Minnesota. Which sought to find out if it is possible to prevent this prolonged form of the disease.

A 40% discount

The researchers therefore recruited more than 1,200 overweight or obese people, aged 30 to 85. Each received – at random – either metformin (a well-known drug for treating type 2 diabetic patients), or ivermectin (an antiparasitic), fluvoxamine (an antidepressant) or a placebo.

After ten months, 35 participants who took metformin were diagnosed with long covid, compared to 58 in the placebo group – a 40% reduction in risk. Ivermectin and fluvoxamine showed no effect. “Metformin is an inexpensive, safe and widely available drug,” says Carolyn Bramante, author of the study. “Its use as a preventive measure might have important implications for public health. »
