He explained that Russia had decided to “challenge the validity of the legislation on constitutional grounds” before the High Court of Australia, the highest court in the country.

“It’s part of the Russian plan,” the spokesperson added.

Australia last week took sweeping legal action to prevent Russia from building its new embassy a stone’s throw from Parliament, following intelligence services warned of a risk of espionage.

The Kremlin immediately reacted by denouncing a “manifestation of hostility” which would call for a “reciprocal” response from Moscow.

Russia has been leasing a plot of land regarding 400 meters from Parliament in Canberra to an agency of the Australian federal government since 2008, and in 2011 obtained a permit to build its new embassy there.

In August 2022, the government had tried to terminate the lease for non-compliance with certain clauses of the building permit, but this decision was canceled by federal justice last May.
