In 2022, 9,024 Belgian taxpayers bought a holiday home or property abroad, the average purchase price of which was 288,592 euros, the newspaper L’Echo reported on Friday.

The median value of all purchases (half concluded at a lower price and the other half at a higher price) is significantly lower and amounts to around 180,000 euros, figures from the SPF Finances reveal. Only 1,961 properties abroad were sold in 2022.

Today, 200,546 taxpayers own a second home abroad. Among them, 23,571 own several properties: 17,101 own two, 3,719 own three and 1,346 own four. And 199 Belgian owners have real property assets abroad, with 10 or more properties in their portfolio.

New buyers have a strong preference for Spain since no less than 39% of purchases in 2022 were made there. France, number two, attracted just under a quarter of purchases. Love for Italy, number three, is much more limited, with just 8.8% of purchases.
