The tilt of the Earth determines the length of days and nights as well as the seasons. To illustrate this phenomenon, Simon Proud, a scientist at the UK’s National Center for Earth Observation, has created a stunning animation using data from the Eumetsat weather satellite. We can see how the sunshine on our planet changes over the months of the year. The animation was made from 365 frames all taken at 6 a.m. every day for the past year.
The tilt of the Earth is a specificity that scientists attribute to a possible collision 4.5 billion years ago with Theia, a hypothetical protoplanet whose size would be equivalent to that of Mars. The shock would not only have changed the Earth’s axis of rotation (currently tilted 23.4 degrees from the poles) but also released a large amount of material that would have clumped together to form the Moon.
