Brooklyn Nets’ 2023 NBA Draft: Noah Clowney and Dariq Whitehead – Defensive Pivots and Steals of the Draft

2023-06-23 03:05:00

The Nets had two consecutive choices in this 2023 NBA Draft. Choice 21 belonging to them, and choice 22 from Phoenix as part of the Kevin Durant trade. With those back-to-back picks, the Nets picked Noah Clowney and Dariq Whitehead.

No Rayan Rupert in Brooklyn then. With the first of their two consecutive choices, it is therefore a defensive pivot who will act as a control tower in the racket of Bed-Stuy from Alabama following only one NCAA season. With the second choice via the Suns, it is Dariq Whitehead, an outsider with a certain talent but with an already well-filled health book at 19 years old. A fairly reliable player and therefore a bet for the Nets.

For Noah Clowney, it is probably in relay of Nic Claxton that he will take his minutes which will probably be limited at first, in order to learn the harshness of the NBA in a way that is not too… harsh? Anyway, the defensive potential of the pivot seduced BKN and he should have his chance. His offensive potential is also certain, with 28% from 3 points, he is not a great shooter but can improve in exercise to become a completely credible threat. Obviously, Clowney is still a bit raw, and it will take time to develop, but the Nets have time, and he will learn the trade with good support.

Regarding Dariq Whitehead, he should also spring from the bench in Brooklyn, but that’s if his physique decides to leave him in peace, because the kid arrives in the league with already two foot operations on his “prize”. His medical record has cooled a lot of franchises, but the Nets have decided to select this player with a two-way profile capable of bringing either side of the floor. He shoots from a distance, can finish in the circle and defends well, but he will also have to prove that he can regain all of his abilities, seen in particular in high school and before his first broken foot. The path is long for him, but in a good environment, with a gradual return to competition without rushing, there is no doubt that he can be part of the steals of this Draft.
