The sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri won gold at the European Games in Poland in the technical freestyle of the synchronized swimmers. The duet won the competition in Oswiecim on Thursday with a lead of over 18 points. For the Alexandris it is the first gold at the European Championships following, among other things, two silver medals at the continental title fights in Rome last year. At the World Championships in Budapest in 2022, they won bronze in the technical freestyle.
Behind the Austrians (266.4584), silver went to the Dutch women Bregje Maria de Brouwer/Marloes Steenbeek (248.4283), bronze to the Greeks Sofia Malkogeorgou/Evangelia Platanioti (245.6899). This time there was no competition from the Ukrainians Maryna Aleksijwa/Wladyslawa Aleksijwa, who had won gold in Rome. The Eastern Europeans ended up in fourth place.
“It’s unbelievable. We were very nervous before the competition, you might see how quickly mistakes can happen with the other favorites. We took risks and were rewarded. The relief is huge,” said the new European champions. The change in the evaluation criteria should have had a positive effect on the Austrians. Among other things, more emphasis is placed on difficulty. The Alexandris, who started as 12th of the 19 duets, showed the most difficult exercises on Thursday and overall the performance with the highest degree of difficulty. They had trained intensively on the changed choreography for the past four weeks.
The native Greeks had already clearly won the preliminary competition in the free program on Wednesday, the final of the top twelve is scheduled for Saturday (5:00 p.m.). The addition of the ratings of the two final competitions decides on the allocation of the one Olympic quota place to be allocated at the European Games – the declared goal of the title fights in Poland.
Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri have another triplet sister, Vasiliki Alexandri is a solo synchronized swimmer. But that will not be held in Poland.
