From Argentina to the lands of Paraguay, Chile and Uruguay, the South American Regenerative Agriculture (SARA) program is leading a sustainable transformation in livestock activity. There are already more than 150,000 hectares that have pledged to improve their production by regenerating the soil, an achievement that might only have been achieved thanks to the commitment and shared vision of Latin American producers and partners on the ground.
The SARA initiative offers farmers economic incentives that depend on their demonstrating measurable results. Besides, while regenerating the soil and improving its production, they can generate high-quality carbon credits, which are certified by VERRA, the largest certifier globally. These credits are purchased by companies around the world who want to offset their carbon footprint and be part of the solution to climate change.
The credit program for regenerative production called Ruuts, in collaboration with the Climate Neutral Group (CNG) and its partners on the ground ( Ovis 21 in ArgentinaDe Raíz in Paraguay, Efecto Manada in Chile and Pampa Oriental in Uruguay), have come together with the purpose of regenerating a total of 500,000 hectares in the region and laying the foundations for a more sustainable future for livestock at an economic, social and environmental level. .
“This milestone is a game changer for ranching in general. The possibility of generating sales of carbon credits with 100 hectares is incredible. Additional value is being added to the land, allowing profitability in a sustainable manner. Thanks to the regeneration of the land through holistic management, not only has the profitability of the companies improved, but additional income can also be obtained through the sale of carbon credits”, explained Antonio A. Kusanovic, member and Producer of Efecto Manada in Chile.
In total, there are 99 establishments that have joined the program and cover 153,937 hectares eligible for the carbon program. The producers hope to collect the first carbon credits from 2024 and 2025.
– Argentina It has 73 signed contracts, covering a total of 78,196 hectares.
– Paraguay joins with 11 signed contracts, covering 41,000 hectares.
– Chile It has already signed 12 contracts, regenerating 29,875 hectares.
– In Uruguay, there are 3 signed contracts and 1 pending that represent 5,000 hectares in the transformation process.
A new era of producers
Some of the principles that guide the producers that participate in the program are: careful planning of grazing, perennialization of plots and maintenance of cover constant throughout the year.
“Hopefully we will be more and more the ones that can produce food respecting the dynamic balance that nature has that contains us; It is the wish of my family, mine and all my work team”, expressed the producer Santiago Aghemo.
