Fiedler: “Everyone nods when it comes to how important an inclusive education system is. When it comes to getting down to business, the federal government loses heart.”
Vienna (OTS) – Fiona Fiedler, NEOS spokeswoman for people with disabilities, cannot understand at all that the citizens’ initiative on the right to an 11th and 12th school year for children with disabilities was postponed today: “Everyone nods when it comes to it talks regarding how important an inclusive education system is, but when it comes to getting down to business, the federal government loses heart. She prefers to play for time once more with flimsy justifications – on the backs of the children.”
According to Fiedler, more time to complete compulsory school is so important for children with disabilities because it significantly increases their chances of later gaining a foothold in the labor market: “Inclusive education is the foundation for successful professional integration. And especially children with developmental delays and similar limitations would particularly benefit from further school years, as these have an important influence on their cognitive development and maturity. The unequal treatment that this is not possible in Austria also contradicts the requirements of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which Austria ratified 15 years ago.” The federal government must now quickly implement a solution in the interests of the children and their parents, says Fiedler: “It really is a farce that this hasn’t already happened.”
