In Street Fighter 6, Capcom incorporated a nod to a joke that dates back to Street Fighter 2 and is now becoming reality. If this reference speaks above all to Japanese players, we explain to you why the developers had fun on this one.

Street Fighter 2, a cult game in more than one aspect

Beyond its qualities as a fighting game, Street Fighter II is also renowned for its legendary translation errors. In the American version, we remember the mention of a character by the name of Sheng Long who never existed, but who became cult over time. But imagine that we also find amazing things in the Japanese version. In Street Fighter 2, when E. Honda defeats someone, on the victory screen he says in English “Can’t you do better than that ?“, which obviously has nothing to do with the original version. In Japanese, sumo says “With such a weak opponent, the fight was easier than my usual training.“, which testifies to the haughty side of the character.

However, this morning training he mentions is written “あさ のけいこ” and can be read as a female name that can be said as Keiko Asano. The sentence can therefore be said in two senses:the fight was easier than my usual training” or “it’s easier to fight you than Keiko Asano“. And since Japanese players are very fond of this kind of unintentional puns, a true legend around this mysterious Keiko Asano was born and some had fun wondering where she was in the game, like Sheng Long in the West. Well aware of this joke, the developers of Capcom decided to refer to it in Street Fighter 6.

A joke of more than 30 years which becomes reality!

Among the great novelties of Street Fighter 6, the game includes a World Tour mode that allows the player to create his own character, with blows to the different fighter, while exploring an open world to go to the four corners of the globe. In the streets, we meet many opponents that we can challenge at any time for a confrontation. Obviously, Capcom took the opportunity to make this famous Keiko Asano a character that can be fought in the adventure.

In Metro City, Keiko Asano is even one of the strongest fighters you can come across since his level is barely lower than that of the highest-ranking masters. This is enough to make it a major opponent that we can meet just a few steps from the restaurant of E. Honda. In reality, this is not the first time that Capcom has referred to the character since we remember that in 2016, on the occasion of an April Fool, Capcom had unveiled a fake photo book on which was written Keiko Asano with a feminine figure. And then, Street Fighter 6 also takes the opportunity to integrate the famous Sheng Long from the American version of Street 2 who appears in the guise of an old man who is a master in the martial arts. Like what, the loop is closed!
