Mumbai: Team India is on the hunt for a wicketkeeper following Rishabh Pant was injured in a car accident. Especially in Tests there is a vacancy for a wicketkeeper batsman. As K Rahul is currently out of consideration due to injury, KS Bharath will wear the cap of the Test keeper. Meanwhile, veteran Wriddhiman Saha is not considered for the Test team despite his excellent performance with the bat in the 16th season of IPL. Signaling that Saha’s Test future is over, BCCI sources also clarified who are the names currently in the plans.
The fact that KS Bharath has not been able to take advantage of the opportunity, including in the World Test Championship final, to come into batting form makes the BCCI sit up and think. With this, Ishan Kishan and Upendra Yadav may be considered for the West Indies tour. ‘The old man is thinking beyond Saha. There is no doubt that Saha is the best batsman and keeper. But the age is 38. Making Saha the keeper is only a temporary solution. Young players like Ishan Kishan, KS Bharat and Upendra Yadav should be nurtured. These are the future players,’ a BCCI official told Inside Sport.
In the absence of Rishabh Pant, KS Bharat is the current first choice wicket keeper in Tests but his batting form is a concern. After playing eight innings, he scored only 129 runs at an average of 18.42. Ishan Kishan is another potential wicket keeper considering the batting. BCCI hopes that Ishan Kishan will be a better batsman than Bharat. The player is currently training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. 26-year-old Uttar Pradesh player Upendra Yadav is another keeper who is likely to make the Test team. Upendra has a batting average of 45.02 in first class cricket and 42.31 in List A. The BCCI will announce the squad for the West Indies tour next week.
