More than 3,000 cows died of hypothermia in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul in recent days, where temperatures ranged between 6 and 9 degrees. Given the unusualness of the case, a producer in the area chose to make a series of bonfires to warm the cattle and prevent the animals from losing their lives.
Although the deceased specimens represent a small fraction of the Brazilian bovine cattle -which number regarding 224 million heads- and the situation is unlikely to affect beef production, the deaths drew attention for the unusual manner in which they occurred.
Faced with the fear that the climatic conditions would extend over time, a rural producer in the Itaquiraí region took a particular measure for cattle to survive: made a fire for the cows to gather around. In a video, which immediately hit social networks, you can see several heifers gathered in circles, sheltering from the cold around the coals.
According to the Archyde.com agency, the owner of the agribusiness consultancy Scot Consultoria, Alcides Torres, “local breeds of cattle can withstand the low temperatures of the country’s winter.” He even remarked that the country “exports live cattle to be slaughtered in Turkey under the snow.”

Meanwhile, the veterinary services of Mato Grosso do Sul limited themselves to issuing a statement in which they updated the number of deaths of cows related to the cold to 2,725.
According to the local site g1.globo.com, the director-president of the State Agency for the Defense of Animal and Plant Health, Daniel Ingold, explained that “cattle are better adapted to hot weather and the sudden drop in temperature leaves the animals more exposed”.
Hypothermia occurs when the body temperature drops below normal.. The nutritional status of the animal, the absence of shelters to protect the specimens from climatic changes, among other factors, can contribute to cases of mortality due to hypothermia, the authorities said.

In Brazil, the world’s largest beef exporter, cattle graze mainly free-roaming. During winter, dry weather and lower feed availability tend to restrict supply, raising livestock prices, unlike in the first half of the year.
“With this cold, with the threat of frost, people thought that there would be an excess supply of cattle,” Torres said. “There was not, which suggests that supply is adjusting to demand.”
