Lando Norris, penalized by 5 seconds during the 2023 F1 Canadian Grand Prix, lost a great opportunity to score points for Mclaren. While he had crossed the line in ninth place, the person concerned was finally demoted out of the points. To the delight of Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas, respectively 9th and 10th in the race.
F1: two-speed justice or bad faith?
However, the term “unsportsmanlike behavior” does not sit well with Norris, who does not understand why his maneuver was judged in such a way. Lando is accused of having slowed down excessively when leaving the safety car, so that his stop would be the least penalizing possible. Something he defends, arguing that this practice was common in F1.
« It doesn’t make sense to me. I was, what, three seconds, four seconds behind my delta, which everyone does quite often. It was too early to box for what we had planned to do, so I hadn’t planned to box in the first place, and then I got a call just before pit entry. I’m surprised… Of course you go slow and you go fast, you accelerate, you want to keep the temperature in the tires, so everyone leaves spaces and opens spaces. It wasn’t like I was 10 seconds behind my delta, so if it’s because of the difference in delta, then probably most people should be getting penalties for the last three or four years! So I’m a bit confused, but there’s nothing I can do. I slowed down to try to warm up the tires a little and as soon as [l’équipe] told me to box, I attacked and tried to go as fast as possible. »
