Lebanese Parliament Speaker: The meeting with Le Drian was frank and good
Jean-Yves Le Drian, the special envoy of French President Emmanuel Macron, the former foreign minister, began his tour of Lebanese officials, with a meeting this evening with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, who confirmed that the meeting was frank and good.

A source close to Berri told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that “Le Drian does not carry with him a presidential initiative, but he listened to Berri’s position on the presidential crisis and the reasons that prevent the election of a president for the country, 8 months following the end of President Michel Aoun’s term, and Berri stressed to Le Drian the importance of Conducting a national dialogue to end the presidential vacancy, which can only be filled by agreement of the Lebanese political forces.
And the media office of the French Embassy in Beirut announced in a statement that, “A schedule for the visit program of the French envoy, Jean-Yves Le Drian, to Lebanon will not be distributed, and there will be no press conference for him.”
It is expected that Le Drian’s visit will cause a breach in the internal scene, especially following the current session of June 14, which resulted in a vertical division and deepened the differences between the political forces, especially over the two sides of two parties, each of which clings to its candidate for the presidency, which made the Lebanese parties acknowledge the difficulty of a local solution. And their dependence on the outside and developments in the region to put an end to the crisis.
French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Le Drian as a special envoy to Lebanon, who is very familiar with the Lebanese issue, and “well versed” in the political boats and the Lebanese structure, and understands the mentality of the country’s leaders, and he had previously addressed them on more than one occasion and declared strongly worded messages and raised a “stick” in the face of those obstructing solutions. In the context, a diplomatic source at the French embassy in Beirut told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that “Le Drian’s tour will include leaders and political officials in the country in the first place, and during the meetings he will explore the opinions and positions of the parties, and listen to their views on the crisis, its causes and matters that prevent an agreement.” Among the Lebanese components,” noting that “it may also include a meeting with the ambassadors of the five countries concerned with the Lebanese presidential file, to put them in the atmosphere of his tour.”
And the source points out that “Le Drian does not carry with him any name for the presidency or a specific presidential initiative, as Paris does not interfere with names and considers this an internal matter, and his task is more to listen to everyone’s opinions and try to find ways to bridge the views between the parties, while he urges officials on the need to find A way out of the crisis as soon as possible, and procrastination will have a negative and significant impact on the Lebanese people immersed in the worst economic crisis in the country’s history.
The source does not rule out that Le Drian carries with him a threat to impose sanctions on those responsible for obstruction and prolonging the presidential vacancy. “This is possible and falls within the framework of pushing for a solution.”
