Urine strips: Quebec will set up a one-stop shop, the opposition demands more

As of this summer, we are going to put in place a new trajectory to ensure the care of women by a multidisciplinary team via a one-stop shop, indicated by email the office of the Minister of Health of Quebec, Christian Dubé, who was not available for an interview.

This new trajectory will make it possible to have a medical evaluation in order to determine whether surgery is required or not, specifies the firm.

“Now, it is clear that the situation does not yet sufficiently represent the care that we must provide. »

Urine strips are used to stop stress incontinence. Women sometimes experience complications as a result of their installation, but their removal can also cause its share of inconveniences.

No refund program returns

However, Quebec does not undertake to reimburse the cost of the operation once more for women who choose to go and have the strips removed in the United States, where a doctor specializes in this area. Yet this is what many women and elected officials are asking for.

Opposition health critics are unanimous: they believe that women should be able, at least for now, to obtain reimbursement for going to have their strips removed on American soil.

“As soon as there are Quebec women who need this service […] but who do not trust, for all sorts of reasons, the Quebec system, [le fait] to reinstate this program [de remboursement], that would be the least of it. »

— A quote from André Fortin, Member of the Liberal Party of Quebec

If there is a way to relieve these ladies and that way is to send these women to a specialized clinic in the United States, well, of course, it must be done, affirms the MP from the Parti Québécois Joel Arseneau.

Ask questions regarding centers of expertise

In light of the questions raised by a number of women, the opposition members on health care believe that the existing system needs to be examined.

There is an absence of responsibility from each of the partners, believes Joël Arseneau. If the centers of expertise that we have created in Quebec are not able to deliver the results, we have to be able to admit it.

“What is particularly revolting in this is that Quebec women should not be guinea pigs until we are able to carry out such operations in Quebec. »

— A quote from Vincent Marissal, Member of Parliament for Québec solidaire

Residents of the Mauricie have told us of experiencing a lot of pain since they underwent an operation to remove the strips in one of the centers of expertise created by Quebec.

If the department claims that we have reached the appropriate level of expertise in Quebec, let it prove it, adds Vincent Marissal.

The Council for the Protection of the Sick is concerned

In tapes we obtained copies of, doctors are heard normalizing the claim that regarding one in three operations go less well.

Imagine that you enter the operating room and that you are told: “You have a one in three chance that the operation will not be successful and that you will experience serious pain followingwards”, protests the president of the Council for the protection of the sick, Paul Brunet.

He believes that it is extremely imprudent to operate in such a context and thinks that Quebec should act.
