Vintage Seaside Delights: Exploring the Art of Emilie Arnoux

The pretty “vintage seaside” views of Emilie Arnoux

Here is an artist who was well spotted (including by us) at the last “Art Miami” fair in December 2021 where she was represented by the Fremin gallery (in Chelsea, New York). Emilie Arnoux manages to combine a simple and adorable style at the same time. From an early age, this Norman was fascinated by the ocean and the laid-back lifestyle engendered by surfing culture. His work captures the divine energy and jubilation felt when diving into cool water for relief from searing heat; tanned bikini-clad bodies soak up vitamin D poolside or while swinging attractively in bright red inflatable rafts… If we were naughty (which we aren’t) it would seem like the sea inspires him almost the opposite of what the dark skies of Normandy inspire! ????

More seriously, Arnoux’s neo art deco style is imbued with a certain American nostalgia, reminiscent of David Hockney and sometimes Toulouse-Lautrec. She reduces three-dimensional objects to flat geometric shapes that are both contemporary and modern, reminiscent of seaside postcards from the 1950s and 1960s.

Arnoux describes his work simplistically: “Nothing but water, light and heat…Laughs on the beach and the wind…Then I take my pencils and brushes and try to capture that energy and the details. who touched me. »

We thought it would be perfect for the cover of our summer 2022 issue!
