The Kia EV6 GT has completed the 2023 1000 Miglia Green, finishing as the highest performing EV in the race and sixth overall. The race came to an end on Saturday, June 17.

The self-proclaimed “most beautiful race in the world”, the 1000 Miglia is an incomparable test of endurance for both the car and the driver and navigator, requiring performance, precision and skill to score well during the race.

The 1000 Miglia Green is a subcategory of the historic event, open only to fully electric cars.

The 2023 event was the longest in the nearly 100-year history of the race, lasting five days and over 2,000 kilometers. The Kia EV6 GT was not only the first Korean car to compete in the 1000 Miglia Green, but the professional rally driver pairing of Jade Paveley and Ross Leach were the only team to represent Great Britain in the race.

Furthermore, the event marked the first time that an EV6 GT has entered an FIA-sanctioned competitive motorsport race.

The intrepid husband and wife rally driving team were able to showcase their impressive rally pedigree during the grueling race by deftly navigating the event and racking up a host of stage wins along the way.

As the teams raced back to Brescia on the final day of proceedings, the Kia team brought home the EV6 GT in the top six, the highest scoring performance EV.

the perfect test

Designed from the ground up as a true GT car, the EV6 GT offers blistering performance thanks to its dual electric motor setup that together generates 577PS and 740Nm of torque across all four wheels.

Coupled with a powerful 77.4 kWh battery, the car is capable of covering 263 miles (WLTP combined) per charge. Charging is just as fast, thanks to the car’s E-GMP platform that supports 800V charging, enabling a charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes at the fastest charging points.

Importantly, despite the considerable distance and demanding nature of the roads and speeds required for the race, each of the timed sections covered during the event was completed on a single car charge.

Charging was completed with Kia Charge and, where possible, with destination charging at hotels at the end of each day. Kia Charge offers access to more than 540,000 charging points across Europe, allowing easy access with a single account to a large number of charging operators and networks.

The 1000 Miglia Green’s combination of fast highway driving with police escort along with precision time trials and special stages on closed roads were the perfect test for the car’s considerable performance. 0-62mph is dispatched in just 3.5 seconds, at the car’s official top speed of 162mph.

This made it the second fastest electric vehicle entered in this year’s race.

Day to day

On the first day of the event, the cars set out from Brescia, in northern Italy, before passing through Lake Garda, Verona and then on to Ferrara, where the first stage ended. Unfortunately, due to a timing equipment failure, Team Kia started day one on the back foot, finishing in 11th position overall.

On the second day, the pilots tackled a climb to the top of San Marino, the fifth smallest country in the world, while crossing the Apennine Mountains through heavy downpours that made conditions particularly difficult.

This was one of the longest stages of the event, starting in Cervia-Milano Marittima and ending in Rome. With particularly adroit driving and navigation, Jade and Ross moved up the leaderboard to finish day two in ninth position.

One of the most scenic sections of the race, day three saw riders climb the pass into the Tuscan hills, perform several climbs and lakeside time trials before arriving at the famous Piazza del Campo in the city of Siena.

The riders climbed further up the mountains to reach a ski center near Pistoia and the leaderboard to seventh, before ending the day in Parma.

The last two shorter stages ran through Alessandria to Milan and then from Milan to Brescia, Italy’s City of Culture along with neighboring Bergamo by 2023, where the race concluded.

Thanks to precise timing and precise handling of the car, the racers managed to increase their score to finish in sixth place overall.

nothing but praise

Jade Paveley, rally driver and commentator, said: “This has been an incredible experience and it’s unlike any other I’ve been a part of. The EV6 GT proved to be not only a competent race car, but also an outstanding grand tourer as we traveled across Italy at speed and in comfort; and I was even able to enjoy many of the beautiful landscapes of the country.

I would of course like to thank the organizers of the 1000 Miglia Green for organizing a great race and the Kia UK team for the opportunity to take part in one of the most prestigious rally events in the world.

The EV6 GT is absolutely worthy of wearing the GT badge. Not only is it exceptionally fast, but it is also comfortable for long distances, fun to drive and we never had any range anxiety as a result of its great driving range.”

Ross Leach, rally driver and navigator, added: “The 1000 Miglia Green is a fantastic challenge that combines fast driving on the open road with time trials and special stages.

It’s a great way to put any car through its paces and while incredibly demanding, the EV6 GT never missed a beat and was a constant joy to be in.

Particularly when it comes to sheer speed and handling, the GT is easily capable of holding its own. , even once morest those of the supercar segment.

We are delighted to have entered this year’s event, put the EV6 GT to the test and come home sixth overall, but as the highest scoring performance EV.”

The EV6 GT made history for Korea as the country’s first car to participate in the 2023 1000 Miglia Green, and the event also marked the first time an EV6 GT has participated in an FIA-sanctioned competitive auto race.
