Seborrheic dermatitis is a disease that causes discomfort, affects the appearance and provokes unpleasant emotional experiences. Fortunately, today it is easier to deal with it than before. The main thing is not to try to mask the manifestations of the disease and choose the right remedy in time.

Why seborrheic dermatitis appears and how to recognize it

Itching, redness, peeling, inflammation – this is how seborrheic dermatitis manifests itself, the foci of which are located both on the scalp (one of the most common manifestations of the disease in a mild form is dandruff) and on areas of the body rich in sebaceous glands. This is the face, chest, back, armpits, buttocks. The progression of the disease may be accompanied by complications: the addition of a secondary infection at the site of inflammation, alopecia – hair loss, erythroderma – a large-scale inflammation of the skin.

The sebaceous glands begin to secrete a large amount of sebum, and the fungi of the genus Malassezia, which are normally present on the surface of the skin in small quantities, actively multiply, which leads to the appearance of unpleasant symptoms of the disease – the skin begins to itch and peel off. Exfoliating skin particles and excess sebum become a breeding ground for fungi, which further enhances their reproduction.

Often, seborrheic dermatitis debuts or worsens once morest the background of severe stress, acute lack of sleep, hormonal or immune disruptions, and also following taking certain medications.

Seborrheic dermatitis affects people of all ages – from infants to the elderly, but most often the disease is encountered people over 30. Illness is serious affects the quality of life, patients experience not only physical, but also emotional discomfort. Self-esteem falls, due to the manifestations of the disease, people sometimes begin to lead a more secluded lifestyle.

How to control the disease and prevent relapses

Despite the fact that seborrheic dermatitis can be controlled with modern drugs, many people simply try to hide the manifestations of the disease with cosmetics or clothing. Another scenario is associated with self-diagnosis and self-treatment: patients try to cope with the disease on their own, without contacting a specialist and without resorting to modern therapy. At best, this approach is useless, at worst, it provokes the progression of the disease and the development of complications, for example, skin atrophy from the uncontrolled use of improperly selected products.

There are a number of remedies that really effectively cope with seborrheic dermatitis. These are, first of all, topical glucocorticosteroids, which can be used only as prescribed by a specialist and under his control, and only in the acute phase. Self-use of such drugs can provoke unwanted side effects, up to skin atrophy.

In addition to glucocorticosteroids, agents with antifungal components are actively used to combat Malassezia, as well as drugs that contain substances with a broader spectrum of action.

They not only have antifungal activity, but also have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, as well as normalize sebum production and regulate the rate of cell division.

One of the substances that work in this way is zinc pyrithione, which is part of, for example, the drug “Cinocap”. It has a complex effect: it fights once morest Malassezia fungi and helps to eliminate flaking and inflammation, depriving the fungus of a nutrient medium, thereby breaking the “vicious circle” of seborrheic dermatitis. In addition, its use reduces one of the most unpleasant symptoms – itching and accelerates the restoration of the skin barrier.

“Cinocap” is issued in two dosage forms. This is a cream that is easily absorbed, softens the skin and is suitable for smooth skin (face, ears, armpits), as well as an aerosol with a special nozzle, with which it is convenient to apply the product on the scalp.

Most treatments for scalp seborrhea, including dandruff, come in the form of shampoos. According to the instructions, following application, they should be left on the skin for at least 3-5 minutes. Not everyone follows this recommendation, which significantly reduces the effectiveness of therapy. When using an aerosol, the substance contacts the scalp and the fungus present on its surface for a longer time, which contributes to a pronounced therapeutic effect. But there is a caveat: the drug in the form of an aerosol must be washed off with a regular shampoo.

“Zinocap” can be used both separately and as part of complex therapy – a specialist will help you choose the right option.

Seborrheic dermatitis, like many dermatoses, is a chronic disease. It tends to recur even following successful treatment. In order to avoid exacerbation and repeated episodes of the disease, it is important to try to avoid stress and psycho-emotional stress, be attentive to the selection of care and cosmetic products, monitor your health and keep chronic diseases under control. The appearance of the first signs of exacerbation is a reason to start treatment in the early stages, without wasting time.
