With the shortages of basic food products and the speculative acts observed in recent years in various fields, the nightmare of Tunisians resurfaces with the approach of Eid El Idha with an unprecedented rise in the price of sheep. Added to this is inflation, which comes to play spoilsports. The debates on the price of mutton have been agitating the Web for several days, opinions converging on the necessary intervention of the executive to allow citizens to celebrate the ritual feast of Eid El Idha.

Many households are increasingly complaining regarding prices that have reached levels that are difficult to imagine and risk skipping this Eid ritual. Citizens note at their expense that prices have practically doubled compared to last year. There is even talk of sheep whose price easily exceeds a thousand dinars. In any case, the outbreak makes you dizzy. Breeders explain the level of prices by the high cost of animal feed which, according to them, has reached unprecedented peaks this year.

In Tunisia, the first country to react to speculative aims, the reference price for sheep meat has been set at 17.800 dinars/kilo live in the points of sale that will be open. This rate was agreed during a working session held recently between representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (Utap), the Interprofessional Grouping of Red Meats and Milk , as well as the Ellouhoum Company. Most breeders have approved this tariff which takes into consideration the purchasing power of Tunisians. As for the average price of sheep, it will be around 890 dinars, knowing that this price was calculated on the basis of the weight of a sheep of 50 kilos.

Although the supply is there, with 1.2 million sheep, tension is still mounting in the face of exorbitant prices. Apprehensions are emerging regarding a possible disaffection of low-income citizens for the purchase of sacrificial sheep given the decline in purchasing power.

This coveted religious celebration is a little less so this year, due to the crisis. Faced with a particularly dry year, as well as the multiple crises that have hit the national economy head-on and therefore the household stock market, the mutton will certainly have a bitter taste.

Breeders are the farmers most affected by the harmful effects of the drought that has raged in recent years. The cost of production has steadily increased to levels never before seen. Inflation accentuated by the rise in the price of animal feed, fuel, as well as the cost of transport are at the origin of the surge in prices on the market.
