South Korea will build a floating city

Busanin the extreme southeast of South Korea, plans to build a floating city that adapts to sea level to shelter climate refugees. The goal is to have it ready for the 2030 World Expo, which also intends to host Rome, Riyadh (capital of Saudi Arabia) and Odessa, the Ukrainian city on the shores of the Black Sea.

The design of Oceanix Busan -three platforms connected to the ground by bridges- belongs to the group Samsung already HIMHabitatthe international agency in charge of promoting socially and ecologically sustainable cities and towns.

With 60,000 square meters, the first objective will be to measure how much energy is consumed and how much waste is generated by an initial population of 900 people, who will live on agriculture, electric vehicles, and filtering systems and water collection.

North Koreans denounced that they are “starving” while Kim Jong Un reinforces his nuclear arsenal

If it proves to be self-sufficient, the city might accommodate 10,000 people who lived in coastal areas and had to be evicted due to the effects of the climate change. In this case, technologies capable of being extrapolated to other cities under threat will also be studied.

The context seems to justify the investment of almost USD 6,000 million. The sea level has risen more than 20 centimeters since 1880 and, in less than two decades, climate change might cause the flooding of coastal areas where 300 million people live.
