BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Andrew Tate, known for expressing misogynistic views on social media, appeared in court in Romania Wednesday, where prosecutors charge him with rape, human trafficking and forming a criminal group to exploit women.
Tate and his brother, Tristan, who is accused of the same crimes, arrived at the court in the capital, Bucharest, flanked by six bodyguards.
The prosecution also filed charges once morest two Romanian women in the same process. The Romanian agency once morest organized crime alleged that the four defendants formed a criminal group in 2021 “to commit the crime of human trafficking” in Romania, as well as in the United States and Great Britain.
The agency alleged that seven women were tricked into taking them to Romania, where the group sexually exploited and subjected them to physical violence. One of the defendants is accused of raping a woman twice in March 2022, according to the statement.
Tate, 36, is a professional kickboxing fighter with millions of followers online. He has been living in Romania since 2017, and has been banned from various social platforms due to his misogynistic and hate speech.
Tate maintains that the Romanian prosecutor’s office has no evidence and that the case is a conspiracy to silence him.
The Tate brothers, who have dual British and US nationality, and the two Romanian suspects were arrested at the end of December in Bucharest. On March 31, the brothers won a judicial appeal to be granted house arrest.
