After including the annual grades and the compensatory exams, there were hardly any “insufficient” left, as in previous years, according to data from the Ministry of Education.
In mathematics, almost eight percent wrote a five on the exam at the AHS this year (2022: eleven percent), at the BHS it was 18 percent (2022: twelve percent). In English, it was “not enough” for seven percent at the AHS (2022: six percent), at the BHS it was eleven percent (2022: nine percent). In German, six percent of the work at the AHS was assessed negatively (2022: seven percent), at the BHS, as in the previous year, eight percent.
As always, the rate of five in the Matura certificate is significantly lower. As in previous years, the annual grade was included in the final grade. So if you had at least a three in the final certificate and at least 30 percent of the points in the written exam, you got a four (or even three) in the Matura certificate despite the negative exam grade.
Fewer fives in math at AHS
Even if that wasn’t enough, the negative grade in the so-called compensation exams at the beginning of June might be corrected. In the end, therefore, only regarding one percent of the students in German, maths, or English at the AHS failed the Matura. At the BHS, one percent remained negative in German and two percent each in English and maths. This is roughly the same as in previous years – only in math was the final rate of five at the AHS this year slightly lower, at the BHS, on the other hand, that in English was slightly higher.
The poorer math results at the BHS are also reflected in the top grades: this year only 6.4 percent of the BHS students achieved an A in math – in 2022 there were more than twice as many (13.5 percent). In the other subjects and at the AHS, however, the results were regarding the same as in the previous year. At the BHS, as in the previous year, 17 percent had a first in their Matura certificate in German, and 21 percent in English (2022: 23 percent). At the AHS this year, as in the previous year, 23 percent got a first in German, 26 percent got a first in English (2022: 30 percent) and 21 percent got a “very good” in mathematics (2022: 18.5 percent).
Hardly any differences in the federal state comparison
In a comparison of the federal states, there were hardly any differences in the “insufficient”: At the AHS only the students in Salzburg had a failure rate of more than two percent in maths, at the BHS Salzburg once more stood out in English and Vorarlberg in mathematics with slightly higher fives out.
Conversely, at the AHS, Styria shone with the most ones in German (27 percent) and Burgenland with the most “very good” in English and math (28 percent each). At the BHS, the most top marks were in German in Carinthia (21 percent), in English in Styria (25 percent) and in mathematics in Upper Austria (eight percent).
For Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP), “the results in all subjects throughout Austria can be seen and the high level of the last two years might be maintained,” said a statement sent to APA.
