Who will not praise Brandauer? He has been enchanting theater audiences for six decades. He also made an international film career, directed himself and taught at the Max Reinhardt Seminar. Now he is celebrating his 80th birthday.
This Thursday is a public holiday for the Burgtheater. On June 22, Klaus Maria Brandauer will be 80 years old. Naturally, he is then on the top stage in the country, whose ensemble he has been a member of for half a century. In a celebratory performance, the chamber actor will perform Thomas Bernhard’s “Minetti”, so to speak on an equal footing with the actor of the century following whom the poet of the century named his play.
Incidentally, the drama from 1976 is regarding the swan song of an old mime and takes place on New Year’s Eve in a hotel lobby. It talks regarding “King Lear”, who else? The character in Bernhard’s play hasn’t played what is perhaps the craziest role in William Shakespeare’s tragedies for 30 years. Both Bernhards Minetti and Brandauer have of course shone as this king of loss of control – the latter was quite a bit younger, in his last premiere at the Burgtheater, 2013/14. Directed by Peter Stein.
Well, turning 80 is no merit. But how much of this span did Brandauer make at the fulfilled time!
