“Korea will create the most perfect world exposition in history.”

President Yoon Seok-yeol gave a presentation (PT) to host the 2030 World Expo (Expo) at the General Assembly of the Organization for International Expositions (BIE) held in Paris, France on the 20th (local time), emphasizing the ‘prepared candidate country’. President Yoon said, “The 2030 Busan Expo will be remembered as an expo that changed our perspective from the logic of competition to the value of solidarity,” and said he would share Korea’s experience with the international community.

President Yoon was the last of the four presenters to give a 30-minute Korean presentation at the 172nd BIE General Assembly. In the fourth presentation ahead of the decision to host the 2030 World Expo in November, efforts were made to publicize Busan’s suitability with the keywords ‘future, promise, reciprocity, and solidarity’.

In a speech delivered in English, President Yoon emphasized that he would share Korea’s development experience with the international community through the ‘Busan Initiative’ and contribute to solving common problems of mankind. “The Republic of Korea, which was devastated by war 70 years ago, has transformed into an economic powerhouse with advanced industries and innovative technologies thanks to the help of the international community,” he said. “The Republic of Korea wants to repay the international community for what it has received.” At the same time, he promised to promote the ‘Culture Expo’ where all cultural diversity is respected, and the Expo as a ‘value platform’ that can pass on a clean and safe earth, sustainable peace and prosperity to future generations.

President Yoon mentioned the experience of holding recognition fairs in Daejeon in 1993 and Yeosu in 2012, and emphasized that Korea is a prepared candidate. “Korea is also a country that has hosted mega events such as the 1988 Summer Olympics, the 2002 World Cup, and the 2018 Winter Olympics,” said President Yoon.

The common challenges for humanity include the climate crisis, health and food crisis, the global North-South divide, and the digital divide. President Yoon emphasized Busan’s locational strength, saying, “Busan is a gateway to the Eurasian continent and a city advancing to the ocean.” He said, “The Busan Expo will be a solution platform to respond to complex crises facing humanity.”

On this day, the power of culture, such as Korea’s digital technology and K-content, was emphasized in various places. Singer Psy, who appeared as the first PT presenter, emphasized that the Busan World Expo will become another K-brand that will unite the world. In 2012, 20,000 people gathered at the Eiffel Tower in Paris to perform a ‘Gangnam Style’ flash mob, drawing on the experience of dancing horses together. He went on to say, “At that performance, I realized that despite all of us speaking different languages, we all came together as one.”

In the video, world-renowned vocalist Jo Su-mi and group Espa Carina appeared and drew the attention of the audience. In the first opening video, Karina appeared as a host of a TV audition show to solve current problems around the world. Sumi Jo appeared in the music video for the theme song of ‘We will be one’, a song that aspires to host the Busan World Expo. In addition, Dominique Perrault, a world-renowned French architect who designed the French National Library, explained his architectural philosophy emphasizing the harmony between nature and humans through video, and expressed support for the Busan Expo in line with it. A 3D experience video of the Busan World Expo was also released.

Jinyanggyo, a professor at the School of Architecture and Urbanism at Hongik University, who appeared as the second presenter, emphasized that the Busan Expo will be a space where humans, nature, and technology harmonize. Professor Jin oversaw the master plan, including the concept and design of the Busan Expo. Professor Jin presented ‘Re-Earth’ (Earth once more) as the space design concept for the Busan Expo, and emphasized that the Busan Expo will be an environmentally friendly and carbon-neutral space, operated with 100% renewable energy. Professor Jin designed major parks representing Seoul, such as Cheonggyecheon Restoration Landscape, Dunchon Olympic Park, and Sangam World Cup Park.

The third presenter was Suin Lee, CEO of Enuma, who developed the educational application ‘Kitkit School’, which jointly won the Global Learning XPRIZE competition held in 2019 to eradicate illiteracy in developing countries. He explained that with the support of the Korean government, educational programs were disseminated for underprivileged children at home and abroad, including those in developing countries, and emphasized that ‘cooperation beyond borders’ would be possible through the Busan World Expo. The PT ended with a video of Karina asking regarding your choice for humanity.

It is said that President Yoon personally corrected the manuscript right before the rehearsal at 10 a.m. prior to the announcement. On this day, the competitor PT was organized in the order of Saudi Arabia (Riyadh), Korea (Busan), and Italy (Rome). Ukraine (Odessa) was eliminated from the nomination that day because it was at war. In Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally attended the general meeting, but did not appear as a PT speaker.

The venue for the 2030 World Expo will be decided by the final vote of 179 member countries following the last 5th PT at the BIE General Assembly to be held on November 28th.
