Understanding American Staffs: Challenging Breed Myths and Promoting Responsible Ownership

This week, in our newspapers, we told you regarding a breed of dogs, the American staffs. Two years ago, an 8-year-old girl lost her life. Her mother, sentenced last Wednesday to a suspended sentence of one year, had left her alone with 2 of these dogs. A race often singled out, how to explain it? Are there any special detention conditions? For animal specialists, this breed of dogs does not deserve its bad reputation

In shelters, it is the dogs most often abandoned by owners who have not taken the time to reflect and who are overwhelmed by their animal. “We end up with dogs here who are difficult to manage, especially in terms of socialization because they have not been exposed to other dogs.“, explains Fabrice Renard, director of the SRPA of Liège (royal society for the protection of animals).

Fashionable like other dogs, these mastiffs have sometimes been bred for the sole purpose of profitability, to the detriment of education between mother and puppy. “The codes are learned by the mother, she has 8 weeks to teach them everything. It’s not much, but it takes at least those eight weeks“, details Cécile Husson, veterinary psychiatrist. “Afterwards, it’s up to the owner to pursue“.

An American Staff has a very powerful jaw, but statistically it does not bite more than the others. “Race in itself does not justify this. There is no meanness gene”.

However, the bad reputation of these dogs has prompted many Belgian municipalities to issue decrees concerning them, without any uniformity. “In some municipalities, the dog is totally forbidden on the territory, in others, it can pass, but cannot be detained…

In homes, these dogs, like all the others, hope to find another refuge. The masters will have to type just regarding the motivations. “We are careful with whom we place the dog, it must be someone who wants a pet, and not a weapon“, concludes Fabrice Renard.
