Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Bidenwas charged with illegal possession of a weapon and late filing and paying his tax returns in 2017 y 2018, according to a court brief released this Tuesday.

According to a document filed today in federal court by the attorney general of Delaware (USA), David Weiss, Hunter Biden has accepted a plea bargain to plead guilty to two tax-related charges.

Under the plea agreement, Hunter Biden, 53admits not having declared to the tax authorities the income he received in 2017 y 2018, and not having paid for them, in exchange for prosecutors recommending probation for him, thereby potentially avoiding jail time.

The arrangement also includes what in the judicial jargon of USA is called “pre-trial diversion” regarding the charge of illegal possession of a firearm. This mechanism serves to avoid a traditional prosecution and that the defendant goes to a program of community supervision.

If a federal judge accepts the agreement, this might spell the end of the investigation into Hunter Bidenwho has splashed his father, Joe Biden, whose political rivals have used these inquiries to cast doubt on the son’s business dealings abroad and to portray the president’s family as corrupt.

This investigation was opened in 2018 during the tenure of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) and has been used by Republicans since 2020 to attack the Democratic president, whom they accuse of not having made any effort to bring this inquiry to the end.
