The Reality of Asylum Requests in Spain: High Denial Rates and Lengthy Processes

2023-06-20 18:03:01

Data from the annual report of the Spanish Refugee Aid Commission (CEAR), published this week, revealed that more than half of the applications for asylum in that country of the European Union (EU) fail, since six out of 10 applications for asylum are denied by the authorities.

Press reports suggest that Spain is one of the EU countries that is furthest behind in terms of this procedure to help people who migrate from their countries of origin, all this despite the fact that they are the third country in the bloc that most requests received per year. Spain is only ahead of nations like Malta or Cyprus.

In 2022, more than 118 thousand people applied for asylum in Spain, figures that Estrella Galán, general director of CEAR, described as unrealistic and sweetened, because they do not count the thousands of migrants who cannot access the system to request at least one appointment. of asylum due to the obstacles encountered.

HOW TO ASK FOR ASYLUM IN SPAIN?

They explain that currently, the average time to request a prior asylum appointment in Spain is around six months and that would imply that there are more than 70,000 people who do not have access to this international protection.

“It is urgent to increase availability and expedite appointment assignment. The registration must be immediate and never exceed the terms of 3-6 days”, he pointed Elena Muñoz, state legal coordinator of CEAR.

Spain was the third country in the EU, behind Germany and France, that received the most asylum requests in 2022, and yet it is one of the countries that grants this protection the least. In recent years, this has also been an option for some Cuban migrants who remain illegally in that country.

According to this study, the majority of migrants who request asylum in Spain are Latin American, and 7 out of 10 arrive in the country by air through a short or study visa and then stay and request asylum. Venezuela was the main country of origin (38.5% of formalized applications), followed by Colombia, Peru, Morocco and Honduras.
