Why thousands of doctors have been placed under surveillance by the Health Insurance

To hunt for sick leaves of convenience. This is the objective of the Health Insurance which has decided to place under surveillance a thousand doctors, considered as the most “big prescribers” of stops.

“They prescribe twice, three times, four times more than the average sick leave per patient”, according to Thomas Fatome, Director of Health Insurance. And to add: “This concerns 2% of the profession”.

A setting under objectives

According to the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, France has seen in 2022 an increase of more than 30% in sick leaves for ten years. An increase that necessarily has a cost. “We must fight once morest these abuses,” insisted Bruno Le Maire.

The “biggest prescribers” will therefore be accompanied to reduce the number of stops. “We are going to go to their office to discuss with them, ask them to reduce their prescription and see how they can change their prescription habits”, explains Thomas Fatome. “We are starting a campaign to set targets”.

“We are made to look like fraudsters”

For the doctors’ unions, this setting under objectives “makes them look like fraudsters”.

Interviewed by France Info, general practitioner Mickaël Rochoy calls on the authorities to also inspect working conditions in certain companies. “We will target doctors, but we might also look at companies where there are the most work stoppages in order to work on the cause to reduce the number of work stoppages in France. Doctors do not make work stoppages of convenience “.
