Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions installs mobile desalination units with Danfoss pumps on offshore oil platforms

One of the world’s largest companies in water and sanitation solutions, Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions Veolia WTS- has expanded its operations in the offshore segment in Brazil. Recently, the company signed a new contract for the supply and operation of Mobile Treatment Units for desalination of water by reverse osmosis for oil platforms in the Campos (RJ), Santos (SP) and Espírito Santo (ES) Basins. As in the first agreement, signed five years ago, the company sought Danfoss high-pressure pumps to equip the skids installed on the platforms.

The skids, as they are known, are the Mobile Treatment Units, responsible for carrying out the process of removing mineral salts from the water and making it sweet. The reverse osmosis desalination technique uses pressure to filter water, passing it through a series of membranes that remove salt. A series of components and equipment form a mobile unit, including high-pressure pumps, which are fundamental in desalination technology.

bombs are essential

“I would say that the pumps are like vital organs, as it is from them that energy (pressure) is given to pass the water in the process of retaining the salt. It is essential that the pumps operate without failures or stoppages and at long intervals, as the equipment operates 24 hours a day and is easy to maintain. Danfoss pumps deliver exactly these attributes,” says Alan Oliveira, Contract Manager at Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions.

In the contract that gave rise to the provision of this service, Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions supplied and operated 7 Mobile Treatment Units ending in August 2022. As for the second contract, started in September 2022, it increased the fleet to 20 skids. The water from the desalination process is for internal use. It is important to point out that the Mobile Treatment Units are assembled at the Veolia plant located in the city of Sorocaba (SP).

Varieties of Danfoss pumps

To get an idea of the importance of having highly reliable equipment and components, the mobile units operate 24 hours a day, 28 days a month. Each of them has the capacity to produce 30 million liters of water per year.
Another important aspect in this type of application is the need for the equipment not to require frequent maintenance, since access for people to offshore platforms is restricted and complex. This is a big advantage of Danfoss pumps for desalination.

“Axial piston pumps outperform centrifugal pumps and internal studies show that APP technology delivers efficiency rates of over 90% to achieve the lowest lifecycle costs available,” says Anderson Ferreira, Danfoss Sales Engineer, which adds: “The pumps were created specifically for seawater reverse osmosis applications, so it is the most reliable and sustainable solution for desalination”.
Veolia’s Manager corroborates Ferreira’s statement by stating that Danfoss pumps never had any problems. “A project of this complexity was custom-designed and requires highly reliable and high-performance equipment. The pump is one of the protagonists of the success of the application”, concludes Alan Oliveira.
In the production and assembly phase, the Veolia WTS Mobile Treatment Units were installed from January 2023.
