After a Russian was killed in a shark attack off the coast of Hurghada in Egypt, social media users circulated a video whose publishers claimed it showed a young man jumping into the water and catching that predatory fish. But this video was published years ago and has nothing to do with that incident.
The video shows a young man jumping out of what appears to be a boat in the sea, then grabbing what appears to be a large fish.
The accompanying comments stated that the video shows “the moment an Egyptian fisherman caught a Hurghada shark.”
The appearance of this post in this context comes days following the death of a young Russian man in a shark attack off the coast of the Egyptian city of Hurghada, overlooking the Red Sea, on the eighth of June.
The Ministry of Environment said that its specialized teams “caught the fish that caused the accident for examination,” in light of the abnormal behavior of the shark that was observed.
In this context, the video spread that was said to show an Egyptian fisherman catching a shark.
Searching for it on search engines shows that it was published years ago, which denies that it is recent, as the publications claimed.
The video can be found on social media pages in 2019, accompanied by various comments.
It was not possible for AFP journalists to confirm the circumstances of the video. However, its publication in 2019 denies that it is recent.
