Los Denver Nuggets are the reigning NBA champions, but all the Best Basketball in the World activity continues with the offseason. Free agency is approaching, but above all the most anticipated event for those who hope to see the next stars of the League: the NBA Draft.
This year, two Mexicans are registered: Jaime Jáquez Jr. and Gael Bonilla. Here you will know all the necessary information regarding one of the fundamental events within the National Basketball Association.
What is the NBA Draft?
This is an annual process by which the teams choose new talent, either from the universities (mainly from the United States) or from other countries, mainly those that compete in European, Asian or Australian Leagues, to give examples.
As in other draws, equity between teams is sought, in order to reduce the differences in the sports level of the franchises, so the teams that did the worst in the last season have a better chance of choosing first, although not a guarantee, since the 14 teams that did not qualify for the playoffs they submit to a lottery to determine the order of selection, while the remaining 16 franchises draft according to their order in the regular season.
The lottery process was implemented in order to avoid the tankingan American term used in sports for those teams that they deliberately seek to lose to get better draft picks.
There are a total of 60 selections, so each team can choose twice a year, unless they have made trades or have sanctions from the commissioner’s office. The requirement for a player to participate in the Draft is to be under 23 years of age (in the case of university students) or not having participated in a previous process (in the case of foreigners).
