It has been found that an ADHD treatment, which caused controversy with ‘drug drinks’ in Gangnam academy district in Seoul, is significantly reducing productivity.[사진=게티이미지뱅크]A research result has been found that the treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which caused the ‘drug drinking’ incident in Gangnam, Seoul in April, can drastically reduce work productivity.

A joint research team, including the Brain Center of the University of Melbourne in Australia and the Cleveland Clinic in the United States, investigated the effect of ADHD medication on problem-solving ability in 40 people aged 18 to 35 years old.

The research team tested the effect of three types of ADHD medications (ingredient names: methylphenidate, modafinil, dextroamphetamine, etc.) on the problem-solving ability of the participants. The research team had participants do the relatively simple task of efficiently filling a backpack with a set amount of various items four times a week apart.

As a result, it was found that those who took one of the ADHD medications (experimental group) lost regarding 50% of their backpacking work efficiency (productivity) compared to those who took a placebo (fake drug) (control group). Those taking ADHD medications took longer to complete tasks. They also made more guesses to efficiently fill items. In particular, even those who performed above average while taking the placebo experienced a drop in productivity when taking the ADHD medication.

Dr. Elizabeth Bauman, a neuroscientist at the University of Melbourne, who is the author of the study’s book, said, “ADHD medications increased participants’ problem-solving motivation through an arousal effect, but did not increase productivity. The quality of the work was poor and the work time was much longer.” People who took ADHD medication worked much harder and tried to work faster, but the results were poor. The remedy worked faster, but the accuracy and efficiency were poor.

Among the ADHD treatments, dextroamphetamine had the greatest decrease in productivity, followed by methylphenidate. “These drugs can lead to side effects such as overstimulation, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and anxiety,” the researchers said.

It is known that students use a lot of ADHD medications in the name of increasing learning effects (strengthening concentration) and office managers in the name of increasing productivity. In particular, students use this drug as a stimulant to study for cramming exams. The research team analyzed that even people who do not suffer from ADHD are misusing the drug, believing that taking it can improve concentration and productivity.

In April, at some academies such as Daechi-dong, students received drug drink bottles with phrases such as “Mega ADHD” and “Increased memory and strengthened concentration.” The ingredient of ADHD treatment with the so-called ‘drug to study well’ is ‘methylphenidate’ belonging to medical drugs. It is distributed under the brand names Penid, Concerta, and Medikinet.

According to data submitted to the National Assembly, the number of people who have been prescribed ADHD treatment has increased by regarding twice in the last four years from 37,308 (2017) to 79,037 (2021). In particular, Songpa-gu (8.8%), Gangnam-gu (8.7%), and Seocho-gu (6.0%) occupied a large proportion in Seoul.

Domestic medical experts revealed that taking ADHD medications stimulates the neural circuits, temporarily improving concentration and making it difficult to sleep. Taking this drug temporarily increases levels of neurotransmitters (dopamine and noradrenaline) in the brain associated with attention, motivation, and processing speed. However, if you continue to take it, there are concerns regarding serious side effects such as decreased motivation, sagging body, and suffering from depression.

The results of this study (Not so smart? “Smart” drugs increase the level but decrease the quality of cognitive effort) were published in the international journal Science Advances.
