Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht Disappointment: Exposing the Subjective Coaching Job in Football

Vincent Kompany had a dream season at Burnley. But before that, his Anderlecht adventure ended in a big disappointment, which he mentioned without naming it but clearly in an interview with Gary Neville…

In England, Vincent Kompany is a real star, and that didn’t wait for his fantastic run on the Burnley bench. But the former captain of Manchester City has now added a new line to his CV, bringing the Clarets to the Premier League in his first season.

It was for the YouTube channel of a former rival, Gary Neville, that Kompany answered 27 (like his legendary number at City) random questions. And at the turn of a subject, he notably mentioned Anderlecht. “What’s the worst part of the coaching job?” Neville asks.

Kompany answered clearly: “The worst thing is that it is a job judged subjectively, always, when it should be objective. It should be: “Here is the budget spent; here is the classification of the expenses of the championship and the classification expected from the part of the manager”, he explains.

“If you did less well than expected given the expenses, there are questions you will have to answer,” recognizes Vincent Kompany. “But finding yourself in a situation where you’ve spent less than others, but performed better in the standings, and hearing you say, ‘We’re not sure regarding the quality of your work’…that’s not correct”.

A clear tackle for the management of Sporting d’Anderlecht, who had preferred to separate from Kompany at the end of a 2021-2022 season that ended in third place and in the final of the Croky Cup.
