Senegalese Diaspora Urges National Dialogue for Peace and Economic Stability

2023-06-18 21:14:13

Due to the numerous demonstrations that took place at the beginning of June in the country, Senegalese organizations and economic actors living abroad signed a memorandum addressed to political actors in Senegal. These signatories from the diaspora denounced these demonstrations and their repercussions on the Senegalese economy but also on people with a gruesome record. “We have seen the use of firearms, which for us constitutes a dangerous and significant precedent in the safeguarding of our democracy. They caused deaths and considerable material damage. As representatives of various associations, civil society groups, media, political and student organizations, as well as academics and artists from the diaspora, we express our apprehension and urge Senegalese youth and actors politicians to maintain their calm and serenity. We call on the authorities to investigate the deaths that occurred during these demonstrations so that there is transparency, ”say these diaspora organizations.

They ask the authorities to carefully examine the grievances expressed by the young population. However, the call for national dialogue launched by the President of the Republic is timely. “This dialogue should involve all segments of the nation, including the diaspora, in order to create a safe environment, where all perspectives are recognized. It is essential to address the underlying causes of the crisis through this dialogue.

We see this national dialogue as a significant step forward. We encourage all parties concerned to participate, with openness and commitment, to peacefully resolve the crisis,” say the signatories, while specifying that they respect the choice of those who have not decided to participate.

The diaspora hopes that, through de-escalation and dialogue, Senegal will regain its place in the ranks of countries and nations where democracy and social harmony have reigned for decades.
