Brutal Crash for Nico Hülkenberg in Canada: Race Recap and Analysis

2023-06-18 22:09:47

What a brutal crash for Nico Hülkenberg in Canada: First the euphoria regarding the great performance in the final training, with the second fastest time behind Max Verstappen. Then the first setback: Penalty transfer because of too high speeds with a red flag, three places down, i.e. starting position 5.

In the race, the GP veteran Hülkenberg looked like a boxer whose arm is tied behind his back before he is sent into the ring: The 35-year-old Emmericher was handed back place by place at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and ended up only 15th .

The Haas driver started the race with medium-hard tires, but had to pit on lap 11 due to high tire wear. He got hard Pirelli tires. Then Haas was unlucky: Just one lap following the stop, the safety car came out because Russell kissed the wall. So at the dumbest time for Hülki, who had switched to green. The opponents had much less time wasted with yellow.

In lap 31 another tire change at Hülkenberg, once more on hard rollers, from there it went to the finish. But more than 15th place was not possible with the tire eater named Haas.

Nico says: “It was a little as expected and feared. It was clear to me that we wouldn’t reproduce a coup like in qualifying. But then the same thing happened to me as in Barcelona: when we fight with others, we lose disproportionately downforce and grip. That’s why we have problems with the tires.”

“It’s a trend in recent races. That ruins our Sundays. That’s the biggest issue we have to work on. There’s no point in having nice Saturdays if Sundays pull us down like that.”

“The timing of the safety car didn’t help. But that’s how it works in this sport. We were lucky with the red flag on Saturday to set the second best time, but we were unlucky in the race. But even if that hadn’t happened, we wouldn’t have scored any points that day. It was a one-way street – unfortunately in the wrong direction.”
