I’m going to tell you the love story between a geek and a streaming platform. Maybe my story will resonate with yours. Between Netflix and me, it’s over.

I met Netflix in 2017, and, very quickly, I was stuck, hypnotized. In just a few days, it had become unthinkable for me to look elsewhere.

I’m not going to list the reasons why Netflix has revolutionized the way we consume movies and series.. Everyone has lived through this major turning point in the film industry. When I opened Netflix for the first time, I immediately thought that I was facing a small revolution. The catalog seemed endless, the navigation was the most ergonomic I had ever seen, no slowdown seemed possible and the algorithm understood my tastes better than any of my friends.

Here, let’s talk regarding these tastes. Child of the pop culture of the 80s and 90s, the latter has never left me. In my eyes, the word “geek” has nothing pejorative, it is even constitutive of my identity. As I move into my forties, I continue to consume almost exclusively fantasy or science fiction films and series.

It’s on Netflix that I discovered a lot of new classics of the genre, from Walking Dead to Attack on Titan. Since Netflix was part of my daily life for several years, I “binge-watched” almost all the content directly or indirectly related to the universes that have always fascinated me. Yes. Almost everything. In 2023, Netflix no longer surprises me. The catalog of the American giant was ultimately not a barrel of the Danaides. In recent months, I scraped the bottom while waiting for a few drops of novelties.

And what’s new? Yet another film whose name I won’t remember 2 days later? A “new” series already available on another platform? Another season of an “original creation” whose hype will be sucked to the marrow? Yes yes, I loved Stranger Things… but will I still enjoy watching Eleven and her friends during seasons 5… 6… 18… 42? Surely not.

No matter how hard I rack my brains, I find it hard to identify the precise moment from which I started to get tired of Netflix. The fact is that today the streaming service that I loved so much is starting to bore me. I still think Netflix is a great VOD platform…but not for me anymore. Unfortunately.

My Netflix Cancellation Request

Finally, why stay subscribed to Netflix in 2023?

Since 2017, a lot has happened in the wonderful world of entertainment. Netflix opened a breach, the long-awaited revolution took place and legal streaming put the lead in the wing to the gloomy sites stuffed with erotic pop-ups. Today, many movie and tech giants want or have their Netflix.

Disney, Amazon, Paramount, OCS, Sony, Apple and even French television (RIP Salto, a guardian angel gone too soon) have launched their own Netflix-like VOD services. It goes even further! When you think regarding it for 2 minutes, what is Xbox GamePass if not Microsoft’s “Netflix of video games”?

The competition made me the foot, then the eye. My first Netflix infidelities took place during confinement. I was already subscribed to Amazon Prime for free 1 business day deliveries and promotions. Good news, at no extra cost, I had access to the Amazon Prime Video catalog stuffed to the brim with content that corresponded to my tastes as a forty-something geek. Then later there was
Disney+ ; became particularly interesting to me thanks to the Marvel and Star Wars content, but also to the animated films that I might show my nephews and nieces.

At the same time, Netflix, which has become hegemonic, has embarked on the race for profitability. The price of the service is slowly but surely rising. At home, I have a very good 4K TV and a Dolby Atmos compatible sound system. To take full advantage of it, I logically subscribed to the most expensive Netflix formula: the only one that gives access to a 4K stream. Even if the price of this formula was equivalent to that of an Amazon Prime subscription and a Disney+ subscription combined, I thought it was worth it. After all, Netflix remains a must, and then, thanks to my premium subscription, my loved ones might enjoy Netflix without having to pay a penny. Pleased to offer.

As you know, Netflix recently put an end to account sharing. Game over for my loved ones, another hard blow for me. The platform started spamming me with emails asking me to confirm that my apartment was indeed the primary household linked to my account. Annoyed, I then wondered “But by the way… is it still very useful to pay almost 20€ per month for Netflix?”.

The answer seemed obvious to me: non. It had been several months since only my relatives had used my Netflix account. Today, they don’t even have access to it.

Recently, Diablo IV was released and I spend most of my free time in this dark universe. I keep my Amazon Prime and Disney+ subscriptions, that will be more than enough. Goodbye Netflix and maybe see you soon! We’ll stay friends, promise.
