Richmond. The history of restrictions on abortion rights in Republican-dominated US states might soon be added to a chapter. The South Carolina House of Representatives voted on Wednesday (local time) in favor of a bill that would result in a near-total ban on abortion if it goes into effect.

If so, Virginia would become a southern US outpost where women would still have unrestricted access to abortions. So far, women in the region might still have legal abortions in South Carolina. After the Supreme Court abolished the fundamental right to abortion in the USA last year, more and more Republican states gradually enacted far-reaching bans and restrictions.
Ban on abortions already following the sixth week
South Carolina’s bill would ban abortions following the sixth week in almost all cases. This is a time when many women don’t even know they are pregnant. The bill now goes to the Senate, which rejected an earlier proposal to ban abortion almost entirely.

In neighboring North Carolina, abortions following the 12th week of pregnancy will be banned from July 1 following the Republican-dominated Congress overruled the veto of Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper on Tuesday.
