Pascal Smet resigns: “I did not commit any personal fault. But I had a moral problem. This is the citizens’ money”

It was Foreign Affairs that granted a visa to the two delegations, even though on March 20 a senior department official advised once morest such a visit in an email addressed to a member of the Brussels administration.

Several personalities of the N-VA reacted quickly following the announcement of the Flemish Brussels socialist, including the president Bart De Wever.

“That Pascal Smet takes his responsibilities is correct, but the final responsibility remains with the Minister of Foreign Affairs. She cannot remain in place. A signal, according to which the real political refugees are safe in our country once morest the Iranian regime, is necessary,” De Wever tweeted.

In the eyes of deputy Georges Dallemand (Les Engagés), Mr. Smet’s resignation reflects the “seriousness” of Mrs. Lahbib’s decision to grant visas.

“Pascal Smet should never have insisted on inviting the mayor of Tehran. His resignation is inevitable. Belgium must treat Iran as a terrorist state. Its representatives are persona non grata. granted the visas. The honorable resignation of Pascal Smet in the case of the visas for the mayor of Tehran underlines the seriousness of the decision taken by Hadja Lahbib”.

DéFI highlights the “grey areas” that remain in this file.

“The resignation of Pascal Smet had become inevitable for a major political fault. We must salute his gesture. Gray areas remain. The visas should not have been issued by Foreign Affairs. We will continue work in Parliament this week federal,” warned President François De Smet.

The External Relations Committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday at 4 p.m.
