In memory of Mäder: Evenepoel solos to victory in Switzerland
UPDATE YESTERDAY AT 3:25 PM
The final race from St. Gallen to Abtwil took place just a few kilometers from Mäder’s birthplace, Flawil. Mäder went off the road on Thursday in a descent towards the finish line and fell into a ravine. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Three teams, including Mäder’s Equipe Bahrain Victorious, and several riders from other teams then left the Tour of Switzerland.
On Saturday, the peloton had neutralized the penultimate stage. Up to 25 km before the end, when the time for the general classification was already taken, the field drove together. But then World Champion Remco Evenepoel launched the decisive attack. The Belgian secured the day’s victory and dedicated it to the deceased Mäder. The sixth stage on Friday had already been converted into a “commemorative trip” for Mäder over 20 km.
