Just 19 years old, just two years out of the senior ranks. Shaili Singh is already the best female long jumper in India. Shayli aims to break the record of her mentor and Malayali actor Anju Bobby George.
Shaili jumped a distance of 6.76 meters in April. This is also the second best jump among Indian women. The current record is held by Anju Bobby George who jumped 6.83m.
Anju also believes that Shaili can break her national record, which has stood unbroken for 19 years.
“Anju madam says I can beat their record. They want it to be possible this year itself,” Shaili said. Shaili’s reaction was following the National Inter-State Athletics Championship qualifying round.
Shaili finished behind Malayalee stars Ansi Sojan and Nayana James. Shayli achieved a distance of 6.27 meters. Ansi jumped 6.49m and Nayana 6.31m.
“I missed a month this year due to injury. But now things are getting better. It is expected to be able to jump 6.70 to 6.80 meters,” said Ansi.
Shaili is hoping to perform better in the finals.
