Scientists concluded that drinking two cups of tea a day helps protect the health and organs of the body with age.
Experts revealed that just two cups of hot drink a day can help protect memory as we age. This is because the chemicals found naturally in tea, called flavanols, boost brain power – and thus help with memory and recall.
And this effect is the same, regardless of whether you prefer black or white tea.
Experts came to the conclusion following studying how flavanols – antioxidants found in many vegetables and fruits, such as apples and berries, as well as in tea – affected the memory of more than 3,500 people over the age of 60.
One study group took 500 mg daily, the equivalent of drinking two cups of tea.
Meanwhile, another group was given a placebo.
During the three-year study, participants were given word-recall tasks to test their memory.
At the end of the study, it was found that those who had digested flavanols were 10.5% better on average, rising to 16% for those who started with the lowest amount in their overall diet.
Professor Gunther Kunll, from the University of Reading, said drinking tea was the “easiest way” to increase flavanol intake.
Scientists said that drinking green tea can help prevent arthritis.
And researchers at the University of Sheffield in 2003 found that two compounds found in green tea can help prevent osteoporosis by blocking an enzyme that destroys cartilage.
Contrary to popular belief, drinking green tea may also help prevent tooth decay.
A study conducted at the University of Illinois in the United States of America showed that the bacteria in the teeth stopped growing when people washed their mouths with black tea five times for 30 seconds over a period of 15 minutes, as the components of the polyphenols present in the tea fight dental plaque.
