Hong Kong (CNN) An influencer who claimed to lose 100 kilograms on social media in China has died, raising concerns regarding excessive weight loss and controversy over restrictions on the influencer industry.
The deceased was a 21-year-old woman named Suika. She has been posting her weight loss progress to her tens of thousands of followers on TikTok’s mainland Chinese version, Douyin.
He declared that he would lose 100 kilos from 156 kilos, and participated in weight loss camps held in various places. He recently posted a video of himself doing intensive training and reported having lost 27kg in the past two months.
He died late last month, two days following attending a camp in Shaanxi province, state-run Central People’s Radio (CNR) said.
The camp advocates “nutritious meals, rest, and healthy exercise,” but the women are said to have voluntarily restricted their diet while exercising. Videos and photos of the workout have since been removed from the woman’s account.
State media said the bereaved family had received compensation from the camp, but the exact amount was unclear.
Local authorities are investigating whether there was excessive or inappropriate training at the camp.
Last month, a male influencer died in China following drinking a large amount of strong alcohol during a livestream.
