As Ukraine’s full-scale counterattack and Russia’s defense continued for more than a week, African leaders met in person with Russian President Putin to call for an end to the war.

Putin insisted that a resolution to the situation was difficult because Ukraine refused to engage in dialogue.

Could you tell us the details of what the African side requested from President Putin?

A peace delegation consisting of leaders from seven African countries, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, visited St. Petersburg, Russia, and met President Putin.

President Ramaphosa called for an end to the war, saying it is having a negative impact on Africa and many other countries around the world.

He said he firmly believes that now is the time for Russia and Ukraine to negotiate to end the war.

President Ramaphosa also stressed the need to open grain transport routes through the Black Sea, exchange prisoners between the two countries, and return children who had fled their homes.

Senegalese President Macky Sall also mentioned compliance with the UN Charter, which stipulates international peace and the prohibition of the use of force.

He said he was confident that Russia complies with the United Nations Charter, and gave strength to dialogue and negotiations.

What did President Putin say to this?

[기자]

Simply put, he expressed the meaning of ‘I have an idea regarding ending the war, but it is difficult because of Ukraine’.

President Putin first welcomed the position of the African mission and said he supports strengthening friendly relations with African countries.

However, he argued that it was not easy to solve the situation because of Ukraine.

Russia has never refused to engage in dialogue and is ready to consider African proposals, but Ukraine has said it is refusing to engage in dialogue.

At the same time, he showed a document called a draft agreement discussed in Turkey in March last year, and emphasized that Russia withdrew from Kiu as promised, but Ukraine did not keep it.

Putin disagreed with the view that the world was facing a food crisis because the war had disrupted grain exports across the Black Sea.

It has been claimed that the West, including the US and Europe, has swept all food off the world market to solve their problems related to the Corona 19 crisis.

Regarding the demand that the children be returned to their hometowns, they refuted that there was no problem at all as they brought the children legally.

Regarding the prisoner exchange issue, he explained that the related process was underway and that he was ready to continue the process.

The African delegation had earlier met with President Zelensky in Kiev, Ukraine, urging negotiations for a similarly swift end to the war.

President Zelensky, however, made it clear that he refused, saying that negotiations would only be possible following Russia withdrew from the occupied territories, and that negotiations would only lead to a freeze of war in the current situation.
