RBR’s Concerns Over Leclerc’s Long-Distance Speed: Will Ferrari Challenge Red Bull’s Dominance in the 2023 F1 Season?

RBR feels threatened by Leclerc’s long-distance speed

After two free practice sessions at the Canadian GP on Friday, Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko admitted that the Ferrari and Mercedes AMG teams looked noticeably faster than Red Bull Racing.

Since the start of the 2023 season, the world’s leading functional beverage F1 team, which has won all seven championships, hopes to usher in their 100th Grand Prix championship since its establishment in the Canadian GP this weekend.

However, their driver’s performance on the first day of the Gilles Villeneuve circuit was not satisfactory. Max Verstappen, who is looking for a four-game winning streak, was only sixth fastest in FP2, with teammate Sergio Perez eighth behind Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas.

While the high-speed nature of the venue is considered well-suited to the extremely aggressive RB19 cars on the straights, Marko said he was concerned on Friday by the performance of Ferrari and the Mercedes team, which has introduced a new race car in recent weekends. Their significant upgrades, and the speed of Charles Leclerc in the long-distance, are of particular concern, as it means that the Ferraris, at least in official competition, can rival the Red Bulls. “I guess the gap is a bit confusing,” Marko told ServusTV.

“The lap times at the end of the stage are getting faster and faster, and we are only doing long-distance running at this time. But anyway, our car still needs some adjustments, and the stability is not enough. The long-distance is slightly better, but Leclerc is also very fast, or at least as fast as us, so we have to work on it a little bit more.”

“The whole team is looking forward to the 100th victory, obviously this has caused extra pressure, so the performance within the team is a little bit less than expected, especially in terms of handling.”

“Mercedes has obviously gotten faster, but I’m afraid Ferrari will be stronger here, as you can see, they come in at regarding the same time as us, and Leclerc’s long-distance performance is particularly impressive.”

Although Lewis Hamilton and George Russell took first and second place in FP2, their results came before the rain at the end of the stage, when the track conditions were at their best. And when most drivers compete for lap speed in the early stage of the stage, they focus on the long-distance running with medium tires and high fuel load. Contrary to the Red Bull and Ferrari teams, they are not suitable for comparison.
