Dramatic accident at the Carrière de l’Orient this Saturday followingnoon. A young man in his twenties drowned, under the eyes of his two friends, with whom he was bathing. The three young people dived and swam until the middle of the quarry, which is currently closed due to work on the Orient swimming pool.
One of them unfortunately did not come to the surface. According to our information, his two friends very quickly called the emergency services. Under the command of Lieutenant Vaesken, the firefighters intervened with a boat and divers to find the young man.
Unfortunately, partly due to the size of the Orient quarry, the divers might not immediately find the body. The victim died on the spot.
Mayor Paul-Olivier Delannois went to the scene of the tragedy, as did the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which appointed a medical examiner.
Prevention and the many rounds of the Tournaisis police unfortunately were not enough to prevent a phenomenon that is repeated every year with each heat wave. Police officers regularly hunt groups (some of whom have come from afar) to prevent a tragedy from occurring.
