On July 16, the Alianza de Apoyo al Paciente con Atopica Dermatitis (AAPDA) will celebrate its first year of providing education and support services to patients suffering from this condition in Puerto Rico.

The alliance is a project of the Cross The Goal Foundation that provides support to patients with chronic diseases in Puerto Rico. Through educational programs and events, they seek to give patients access to better treatment and diagnostic options for managing their conditions.

In this regard, Brenda Gerena, executive director of the Alianza de Apoyo al Paciente con Atopica Dermatitis, stressed that patients with atopic dermatitis can approach the Alliance and be guided on the proper care of the fur.

“Apart from the events and educational campaigns, we also help patients individually through referrals… We have the support of dermatologists and allergists who have been very supportive. We have been to different parts of the island and we have found that group doctor who gives us support,” he said.

Ensuring the comprehensive care of patients with atopic dermatitis in Puerto Rico

Brenda Gerena considers it important that patients with atopic dermatitis receive multidisciplinary care that includes the participation of different doctors and health professionals. health. These include nutritionists, psychologists, and allergists.

“Psychological support is also fundamental because it greatly affects the quality of life, which is why in all our next campaigns we always bring a psychologist and a psychiatrist,” he stressed.

Most patients who seek help have not been diagnosed

In Puerto Rico, the majority of people who come to AAPDA are women and the most frequent doubts they have is whether or not they have atopic dermatitis, since, according to Gerena, the patients present the symptoms, but are unaware that they have the condition.

“People usually have a lot of itching, inflammation in the furscratching that causes the opening of the fur and bacteria getting in, so it really is a condition that is critical because it causes a lot of anxiety and everyone wants to know that they can put themselves in the furwhich they can take, but what works for one patient does not work for another, so diagnosis and treatment with a dermatologist is essential,” he concluded.
