Investigation into Illegal Animal Keeping in Borinage Sparks Concern: Updates from Prosecutor’s Office

“In itself, keeping dead and frozen animals is not an offense within the meaning of the law. We are talking regarding dead animals,” said Éric Delhaye, division king’s prosecutor for the judicial district of Tournai-Mons. “Although this case is taking place in the Borinage, in the region of La Louvière, the Tournai public prosecutor’s office has been seized of this file since we are competent in matters of animal welfare”, specified the magistrate.

It was following a complaint from a local resident and an animal protection association, indicating that “living” animals were in a precarious situation in a dwelling in the Borinage, that a police operation was carried out. This complaint referred to the illegal keeping of animals. “There were, perhaps, too many animals in a small space, but there were no abused live animals. All of this needs to be verified and an investigation by the Tournai public prosecutor’s office is underway on this subject. This file has not yet been put under investigation. We are at the information stage. Verifications are to be carried out in the coming days, “added the king’s prosecutor.
