This is the news that intrigued everyone on June 16, 2023. According to a recent study, the contraceptive pill would increase the risk of depression. Yes, you read correctly.
As the media reports Period, a Swedish study that was conducted on 264,000 women has just confirmed a link between the pill and depression. The study published in the journal Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences this June 2023, highlights the researchers’ results: “The first two years of using the pill increases the risk of depression by 73% compared to women who have never taken it.” And that’s not all.
An alarming finding
According to the report, for women who started taking the pill as teenagers, the risk of developing depression is 130% higher. For those who started taking it as an adult, the risk is 92% higher. We also learn that the risk would decrease following two years of taking the pill, but experts note that those who started taking the pill in adolescence have an increased incidence of depression, even following stopping it. An alarming finding, which however, was not made to denounce the pill.
The real goal of this study would be to better inform women regarding the contraceptive pill in order to help them make the best decisions regarding their method of contraception. As a reminder, and as Period specifies, “the pill will remain the most widely used method of contraception in France in 2023, according to INSERM.”
