Seoul: Blinken supports efforts to develop “mature” relations between China and South Korea
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said today, Saturday, that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said he supports Seoul’s efforts to develop a “healthy and mature” cooperative relationship with China.
In a phone call with South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin today, Blinken discussed bilateral relations, China-South Korea relations, as well as issues related to North Korea, according to a ministry statement.
Blinken arrives in Beijing tomorrow, Sunday, on a visit that is the highest level of an official in the administration of US President Joe Biden.
The ministry said Blinken and Park strongly condemned what they see as repeated provocations by North Korea, and agreed that the United States, South Korea and Japan should continue to urge China to play a constructive role in the UN Security Council on denuclearization. The statement did not go into details.
US officials say they do not expect Blinken’s visit to China, the first by a US secretary of state in five years, to lead to a breakthrough in dealings between Washington and Beijing. Blinken said on Friday that the visit aims to establish “open and strong” contacts.
